Vic: Police union urges govt to come to negotiating table

Victoria's police union warns there is little hope of resolving its long-running pay
dispute unless the state government comes to the table.

Representatives from police command met the union in the Australian Industrial Relations
Commission this morning for a routine report on the state of negotiations.

The 45 minute meeting ended with both parties being ordered to continue negotiations
by the commission.

But Police Association assistant secretary GRAHAM KENT says he is not optimistic about
settling the dispute unless the government joins the talks.

He says the union needs to talk to people who have the power to resolve the issue,
which is the government not the commissioner.

But a spokesman for Police Minister ANDRE HAERMEYER says the government will not be
joining negotiations.
