CANBERRA, Feb 25 AAP - A breed of wallaby branded a pest in New Zealand but extinctin Australia may soon head home to be protected as a national treasure.

The South Australian sub-species of the Tammar wallaby has been extinct in the wildsince the 1960s.

But on the New Zealand island of Kawau, where they were imported in the late 1800s,Tammar wallabies are regarded as pests, and their numbers have swollen to 8,000.

Farmers and environmentalists on Kawau, north of Auckland, are tired of the behaviourof the wallabies, which dig and graze in the foliage, destroying …
